13 Night of the Full Moon

ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE sunrise, Aaron spotted the large white rock that Erkun had described to them, glistening in the moonlight.

“Once you see that thing standin’ like a giant icicle, you’re far enough away to stop for a rest.”

Amy had long since fallen asleep in the bottom of the boat, Walter was taking care of the sail, and Airdella was steering. She guided the boat to a gentle stop against the bank, and Aaron stepped ashore, holding the boat steady for the rest of them. He had quickly learned that any movement can shift the entire balance of a small boat. Airdella watched as Amy groggily climbed out, and Walter furled the sail and unstepped the mast. Aaron took the painter, trying to find something to tie the rope to and then struggling to find a good knot to tie, until Amy wordlessly crawled over and showed him how to tie two half hitches. Then she patted him on the shoulder and crawled into the grass, where she promptly fell asleep again.

Walter was beside her in a moment, snuggling up to his younger sister protectively with one hand on his sword hilt. Aaron sprawled out nearby. After struggling out of her chainmail shirt, Airdella crawled along the other side of her sister. Amy reached out in her sleep and felt blindly for Airdella’s hand, which Airdella took and squeezed gently. Airdella continued to hold onto Amy’s hand while she looked over her to check on Walter.

The serious expression she had noticed on his face ever since their whole journey began had grown more troubled, relaxing only slightly in the relief of exhaustion and deep sleep. But he was safe for now. Airdella looked down at Amy. Amy was sleeping deeply, her babyface expression she usually had when sleeping settled deep across her face. But if Walter had grown more serious over the last few weeks, Amy had grown less silent and scared. Airdella studied Amy’s white hand, so pale against her own darker olive complexion, and still so tiny. Regardless of how bold Amy thought she had become, she was still so little and needed taking care of. As she sank into sleep, Airdella felt a strong surge of protectiveness and determined that she was never ever ever EVER going to let anyone hurt her little sister.
